Ginger Reaction - Fulham

Saints are focused on their team spirit and determination to do well, rather than get carried away with a good start. It's still far too early to say how the season will turn out for any club, so it's good to see the players knuckling down to some hard work.

Certainly, Gordon Strachan isn't one to get carried away. He did give some deserved praise to hat trick hero Beattie after the Fulham game. "Beattie is a phenomenon, both in terms of his character and his stamina," said Strachan.

"He gets noisy in the dressing room when he's doing well - so hopefully I'll need my ear muffs on for the next couple of weeks."

"He goes through phases where he scores loads of goals. And the success of the club depends on the strikers - they're the most important people in the team."

On the Fulham game itself, Strachan added: "The game was dead for 20 minutes, in a very strange, surreal atmosphere.

"They scored a couple of goals and my players, with no help from me or the crowd, got it back to 2-2.

"So in the half-time team talk, I told them they had it within themselves to win the game."

Fulham opted to cart out a few tried and tested moans after the defeat courtesy of assistant boss Christian Damiano.

"It was difficult with the wind, but we weren't able to adapt," said Damiano, although Saints seemed fine and even managed some headed goals.

Leaving sense behind, Damiano continued: "We started in July and have now had 21 games," he added. "It's a long season and we have about 25 games to go, so we're trying to rest players."

So, the club are willing to lose ground in the league, just to play a load of games in the UEFA Cup If their league form continues they'll have to do it all over again next year, if they're lucky. Really good sense to achieve prolonged success. We are only in October and they feel they have to rest players. I'd not be happy if I was a Fulham fan. For that and many other reasons, actually.

At least Damiano was right when he admitted that Fulham were shocking at the back, especially at headers."We had difficulty in the air at the back," said Damiano. "They played long balls with Beattie as the target and our defenders had trouble with their concentration."
