The Saints boss believed that his team was strong enough to overcome the Bees despite having a number of absentees from the squad, but agreed that it was a blow not to be able to call upon some influential players.
"We didn't anticipate before the loan window shut that Lee Holmes and Lee Barnard would be out," Adkins told the club's official website. "We also hoped Richard Chaplow and Frazer Richardson would be available, but they didn't make the game.
"From the players we had on the field, I thought we had enough to try and get something from the game.
"I could talk all day long, but the fact of the matter is we were beaten 2-0 at home and it hurts. I hate losing and we've lost too many.
"What we've got to try and do now is not make mountains out of molehills."
