Idiakez was hailed (certainly on here) as one of the great summer signings. A high quality player for Derby last season, he has yet to show that form on a consistent basis with the concern that age and injuries are catching up with him at 33.
Strange that having scored two of the best goals of the season for the reserves he then goes out on loan. With Saints struggling to take their chances, there is a strong case for Idiakez' quality and finishing ability at least from the bench, particularly with Rudi Skacel still mysteriously missing from the line-up.
QPR are the beneficiaries in their fight against relegation and judging by their scrappy performance at Loftus Road they could do with his distribution skills to match the all-action style of Lomas in their midfield.
Clearly with Guthrie coming in on loan, Burley is looking for more energy from our midfield in the end season run in. It is a gamble to hope that the inexperienced youngster can make the difference, although it is a stranger decision still to see Pele out the line-up of late.
Pele has been nothing short of a revelation in central midfield. Quick and strong in the tackle, he shares many of Viafara's qualities in addition to quality on the ball and excellent distribution skills. They would certainly make a strong and pacey partnership away from home.
The real bonus going into the Stoke game is the return of Darren Powell. He has really looked the part since coming back from his long term injury, providing the strong physical presence that brings out the best in Lundekvam. The thigh injury may well have been a case of rushing him back too soon, but you could see why Burley did with some impressive performances at the back.
Despite the individual talents of Baird and Lundekvam, both separately having good seasons, we continue to look shaky at the back, a major concern when we head towards 'squeaky bum' time at the sharp end of the table. A back four of Baird, Lundekvam, Powell and Bale certainly looks the part.
Stoke are strong at home and were unfortunate not to get a point at St Mary's and with the league so tight, they will be looking for revenge. All the more vital that we have a strong defence capable of doing what we have struggled to do all season, hanging onto a lead.
After the Preston game, having played so well in the first half and then thrown it away, confidence will be fragile ahead of a game that is difficult to predict. Let's hope we can get our play-off push back on track with a big away three points and a much needed clean sheet.
