"I still have confidence in my own ability but I have had two years now where I have let myself down a bit. I have had opportunities but not really taken them.
"I don't know why - lack of confidence maybe or the changes of manager? That spell at Blackburn took an awful lot out of me and it took me a long time to get over it.
"But that is in the past. I am 25 now and it is time to show what I can do. I have got nothing to lose so I am just going to go out and enjoy my football and see what happens.
"I feel good. I had a normal summer and enjoyed myself but I have benefitted from a hard pre-season. The training is a lot sharper and I have done a lot of hard work.
"It was good to get on the scoresheet in the first two games even against slightly limited opposition. Now it is a case of picking up sharpness in games and showing what I can do.
"If I get a chance in the first-team then it will be up to me to take it this time because there might not be many more."
It's really good that Davies has finally woken up to his situation. He's gone a long way since his first purple patch saw him move to Blackburn for £7.25 million, a great piece of business for Saints. Unfortunately it's been in the wrong direction.
Now he's been told that he he is expected to be a striker, not a right sided midfielder as others have molded him, and he will have to fight to get a place n the team and even harder to stay there. I hope he makes it, it would be a sad loss not to see him recapture his initial promise.
