After the departure of Saints other fleet-footed bright young thing, Theo Walcott, a new contract for Nathan Dyer is positive news and another sign that Saints have finally turned the corner.
Dyer has broken through into the first team this season and is already a crowd favourite with his electric pace and willingness to take much bigger defenders on. He didn't look out of place when he came on against Premiership Newcastle and has a big future at the club.
The only question mark is why he is only signing until 2008. Surely after the departure of Theo Walcott the club should be doing all they can to hang onto our brightest youngsters, particularly one who has shown he can make the transition into the first team. More likely is that the new contract is recognition that he is now a first team player and needs wages to match.
