Extended player ratings: Forest 3 Saints 1

Starting line-up

Davis - 6: Relatively quiet afternoon until the final twenty minutes when he was left unprotected with Saints attacking and failing to track back in any numbers. Might have stayed on his line for the first with Gardner going away from goal and might have got a stronger hand on the third to keep it away from Earnshaw, but he was hardly to blame for the all too familiar defensive failings in front of him.

James - 7: One of the few plus points from this terrible season has been the emergence of Lloyd James from a youngster out of position and out of his depth into a genuine Championship right back able to attack and defend to good effect. Given the run of the right flank by some slack Forest marking he sent in a number of penetrating crosses, but as ever would have been even more effective if he beat his man and made the byline.

Perry - 5: Solid enough when Forest sent in long balls, but struggled when they attacked with pace with Saeijs coming to his rescue on several occasions. All at sea when Saeijs went off injured as the defence crumbled around him. Needs a strong partner, but will hopefully cope better in League One.

Saeijs - 7 Man of the Match: At times defending single-handedly, he was strong in the tackle, showed excellent awareness to intercept as well as good skills on the ground to bring the ball out of defence, he was our best defender by a distance. We simply have to hope that we can persuade him to extend his stay in League One.

Surman - 5: Competent at left back, if not exactly a dominant defender, he had to reign in his attacking instincts for much of the game, but still managed some good runs down the left flank. Was pushed forward into midfield late in the game where his short passing set up several promising attacks, but left little protection for the defence behind him. Looked gutted at the final whistle after what may well be his last game for his boyhood club.

Lallana - 5: Promising opening with a great cross to setup Euell in the first minute, followed by a peach of a pass to setup Bradley Wright-Phillips for the opener. However, after the first fifteen minutes much of the game passed him by with the youngster still unable to recapture his electrifying form of early season. Scuffed his only real chance when a good run gave him a sight of goal.

Gillett - 6: Given too much to do by Schneiderlin's lack of industry alongside him, he had a hard time closing down Forest's midfield on his own. Still showed typical energy and some better passing than in recent games as well as a willingness to get forward when he could. Should be a very useful player in League One.

Schneiderlin - 4: Such a frustrating player, he clearly has a lot of talent, but fails to show the application to make the most of it. Some lovely spins on the ball, neat passing, but drifted in and out of the game and failed to pressurise the Forest midfield or protect his defence. A decent offer may suit all parties.

Wright-Phillips - 5: Another guilty of drifting in and out games, he nonetheless had his moments, converting his one-on-one, albeit with Smith getting a heavy touch, and looked lively on the ball. Difficult to see his contract being extended given his reported high wages and inconsistent performances this season.

McGoldrick - 7: Like Lloyd James, a player who has come a long way in his first real season after some inconsistent performances. Has applied himself well in recent weeks and was at the heart of Saints' best passing moves in a withdrawn striking role. A hooked shot and an excellent Smith save prevented him getting on the scoresheet, but with a decent strike partner and in the right position could really kick on next season.

Euell - 4: Struck the post with a header in the first minute, but that was his best moment. Clumsy in possession and erratic within sight of goal, he wasted several promising openings and simply does not look a Championship quality striker, despite his Premiership wages.

Substitutes

Gasmi - 1: Quite why he was on the pitch after some terrible first team performances is anyone's guess, particularly as he is returning to France after his loan. Once again far too lightweight for the Championship, shoved off the ball embarrassingly easily and doing nothing in defence but standing in no-man's land waiting for the ball to come to him. Shocking.

Lancashire - 4: On for the injured Saeijs he looked all at sea as Saints defence went to pieces. I said earlier in the season he should be learning his trade in League One, he will be now and will hopefully push on after a poor first season in a difficult position for a youngster.

Gobern - 5: Bizarrely played at left back, the central midfielder looked lively going forward, but unsure of his positioning in defence. Restored to central midfield he should be a real force for Saints after a highly promimsing breakthrough season.
