Going for McGold

The strange decision to sell Ricardo Fuller has left youth team goal machine David McGoldrick fourth in line for one of the striking berths at Saints. Over the course of a season form and fitness dictate that you need five, possibly six with Saints' injury record, strikers.

This means that the 18 year old will have his opportunities to shine after a 44 goal haul for the reserves and youth teams last season. He had already caught Burley's eye with a hat-trick for the reserves and has made the majority of squads this season and the final sixteen on several occasions.

Last season he looked out of his depth in the first team on his only league start, ironically enough against Millwall, being substituted early in the second half. However, as long as he keeps developing and keeps in the goals he will be hard to ignore.

Understandably he was delighted to get on the scoresheet and made his enjoyment plain with an energetic celebration despite the game being well won by then. In the end it was a simply tap-in after Drew Surman put it on a plate for him, but he showed his poaching ability by being in the right place at the right time.

Saints have yet to really kill off a game early in the league this season, maintaining our ever charitable approach to the opposition, seemingly no matter how well we are playing, as Ipswich will attest. However, if we can maintain current levels of improvement, McGoldrick's time will surely come again with another appearance from the subs bench with the game won.

If he can get himself on the scoresheet once again, he can slowly build a career for himself in the Saints frontline where the likes of former academy players Blackstock and Best have failed in recent years.
