Hammill in as Baird turns to dark side

Let's get the bad news out of the way first. Player of the season Chris Baird has officially left for Fulham who raised their bid to compete with that accepted by Sunderland.

You have to wish him well, as he heads off to join former Saint Niemi, but feel disappointed he is leaving after finally breaking through into the Saints first team. His heart and clear passion for the shirt will be sorely missed, even if the £3m comes in handy.

Given the tremendous speculation on messageboards about a series of imminent/pie-in-the-sky takeovers, it seems strange to sell just about the club's last remaining bankable asset, if the club is just about to be taken over, but in truth the move was well advanced already.

On a more positive note, Saints have our annual Liverpool midfielder on loan! Joining is 19 year old winger, Adam Hammill, an England U19 regular.

As with Potter and Guthrie before him, he is something of an unknown in the Championship, having little first team games behind him, aside from a highly promising loan at Dunfermline, making 14 starts and 4 sub appearances, scoring a solitary goal v Celtic (but what a goal!).

Quick and a skillful dribbler, he potentially adds two qualities in relatively short supply in the Saints side. More goals from midfield would certainly help as well and a season long loan gives him plenty of time to make his mark.

Welcome to the club, Adam. Shame you couldn't have brought Hyppia with you...
