The former Scunthorpe boss achieved his goal of getting Saints promoted back to the Championship, but was saddened by the fact his former club were relegated from the second tier.
Following the 3-1 home win over Walsall that sealed his side`s promotion, Adkins said: "When I came into the club I always said my first aim was to get us promoted and I've now achieved that, which is brilliant.
"We will need to strengthen in the summer but not lose that winning mentality and that good keen ethos that we have, and if we keep that we will be in the mix next season.
"I am gutted that Scunthorpe got relegated from the Championship so there are mixed feelings for me at this moment because I spent so many good years there as manager."
Adkins added: "We played some very good football and scored some brilliant goals and I was delighted for the fans and the players. We have now sealed promotion and that is terrific for everyone associated with the club. I am pleased for all the players."
