Rickie Lambert's brace helped the Saints to victory and while Huddersfield can still draw level on points with a win on Saturday they would need a swing of 18 goals to deny Adkins a promotion.
Adkins remained cautious though, as he said: "We have put ourselves in a great position to get promoted - let's not get away from that - but until it's mathematically certain we are up we are not celebrating.
"We have come away from home and played a good game, we scored three good goals and obviously it was always to be very competitive playing against a Plymouth team trying to keep themselves in the division.
"Playing a Peter Reid team is always going to be competitive.
"We are very pleased that we have got another away victory. Obviously emotions run high and we want to take the next step up, that is what the club is geared towards but we are not there just yet. We still have another match to prepare for on Saturday."
