Not the Marian Kind

The writing has been on the wall for the Latvian wizard after he has continually failed to make any of George Burley's recent squads, with the exception of the much changed Millwall line-up, despite his return to fitness.

Hailed as the great hope with his return to fitness in pre-season, this season soon followed the path of others as one injury led to another denying fans the sight of Marian in his prime.

Although the club has yet to officially confirm it, Marian has admitted to fans around the city that he has not been offered a new deal. Today's lap of honour confirmed it as he poignantly lagged fifty yards behind the other players to enjoy the applause one more time.

The crowd responded in good voice, with the mutual affection clear for the talented Latvian who made such a big impact for Saints on his arrival to play his part to keep us up in 1999. In 127 starts for Saints, he has scored 45 times, including the memorable comeback goal in the 3-0 drubbing of sorry Pompey.

With Saints still lacking a clinical finisher in front of goal, many have argued that he is worth at least a pay-as-you play contract, as at his best he is a Premiership quality striker. However, he looks finally to run out of chances after another injury plagued season and it is a great pity that he looks to be finally on his way.

Matthew Oakley made a more low key farewell, with speculation mounting that he will be another out of contract player seeking pastures new come the summer.

There was the welcome sight of Michael Svensson joining in the lap of honour, providing hope that he can extend his deal at Saints and make a return to fitness and resume his outstanding Premiership partnership with Claus Lundekvam.
