While 20-year-old O'Halloran is a regular at Ireland U21 level, he is yet to figure for the Villa first team outside of pre-season. His only first team experience has been on loan for Wycombe making 12 starts and two subs appearances. He is primarily a left back, but can also play in the centre of defence.
Left back has been a problem for Saints all season, with Vignal, Skacel, Wright and Ostlund all tried out there with various degrees of success. Vignal has showed signs of what he is capable of most notably against Leicester, but, like the first team as a whole, has struggled for consistency. He can't be too happy having finally got back into the side.
We can only hope that Burley will now try and re-introduce Skacel back into his more effective position at left midfield having paid so much and worked so hard to bring the talented Czech to the club. With Saints struggling for balance in midfield and creativity, it is a shame to see his tremendous left foot restricted to the bench or wasted at left back.
O'Halloran goes straight into the squad for Saturday's trip to Plymouth.
