The former Portsmouth and Aston Villa targetman was injured in the 0-0 draw against Manchester City at the weekend, after falling awkwardly on the turf.
He joins fan's favourite James Beattie and Latvian international Marian Pahars on the sidelines, leaving a team, currently desperate for goals, seriously depleted up front.
Saints are optimistic that Crouch will not require surgery, but will only know for certain sometime in the next three weeks.
Crouch's injury, however, could hand a lifeline to forgotten man Brett Ormerod, who is currently on loan to Championship side Leeds United. Alternatively, manager Steve Wigley may opt for up and coming talent Leon Best, as Saints struggle to fill the gap alongside Kevin Phillips left by Crouch, Beattie and Pahars.
It was not all bad news for Steve Wigley, however, after being told that he is likely to have Greame Le Saux available to him for the trip to Everton. The veteran full back was also hurt whilst playing against City, but seems to have got away with a minor knock.
