Mark Wotte has made the signing of a striker his priority, having already failed in a move for Dutchman Romano Denneboom from FC Twente.
With so little support from his fellow strikers, not to mention any injury to the in-form Pole, Saints need more options, particularly as Wotte is looking to play two strikers on a more regular basis.
Saints will be scouring the Premiership after the transfer window has closed to try and find players out of the squad after new arrivals. Certainly Man City have a bloated squad and their city rivals Utd have plenty of emerging talent up front with Danny Welbeck on the scoresheet against Saints in the F.A. Cup.
Another weakness in the squad is at right back, with midfielder Lloyd James filling in all season and precious few alternatives. This is a particular concern with the Welsh youngster having picked up a tight hamstrong and a doubt for Saturday's trip to Bristol City. How we could do with Jack Cork's versatility in the squad or even better Chris Baird being allowed back to join Saints from Fulham.
It's going to be a massive task to stay up, but a couple of decent loan signings of genuine quality might just make the difference.
