With Poke a couple of weeks from returning and even Paul Smith nursing an elbow injury, Kevin Miller comes in to bolster the Saints ranks. While hardly a household name, it would have been harsh to deny Smith his opportunity in the side after being kept out by first Niemi and then 'one for the future' Bialkowski.
Miller has made 604 professional appearances for clubs including Birmingham, Watford, Palace and most recently Derby under George Burley where he was again brought in as short-term cover. He has yet to score.
As Miller was out of contract that means that Saints can still bring in another keeper, if required, as one of their allowed 5 domestic loans in the match day squad. It also gives George Burley the option to bring in another domestic outfield player on loan.
Dexter Blackstock was unavailable for comment, but was allegedly privately fuming that he has been overlooked for the keeper's slot against Sheffield Wednesday. Saints hope to placate him by playing him in every keeper's favourite position - striker.
