Fabrice Fernandes holds off Middlesbroughs Geremi.
Gordon Strachan was clearly aiming for a more attacking apporach down the flanks, hence the inclusion of Fernandes over Telfer. Fernandes showed some nice touches, but overall failed to really cause too much distress to the 'boro fullbacks and his final ball was lacking in the second half.
Saints are obviously still looking to bring someone in on the right flank, hence the interest in Leicester's Matthew Piper. Piper has instead decided to go to Sunderland so Saints will have to keep looking.
Anders Svensson looked capable of continuing his World Cup form for the Saints yesterday. He looked lively and, as this pic illustrates as he goes between Jonathon Greening and George Boateng, more than capable of getting past defenders. Having gone without a break for more than two seasons, Anders fianally had a few weeks to recuperate over the summer. He's also had time to settle at the club and we should be seeing him at his best this term. There's every sign that he will be the latest in a long line of superb buys for the club.
Jason Dodd joined the Saints way back in March 1989 and has made well over 300 league appearances for the club. While he has his critics from time to time, it's clear that his skill and experience definitely make him Premiership class.
Dodd has been able to show the extent of his ability now that Saints have a tighter defensive unit around him. The central pairing of Williams and Lundekvam and The sheer talent of Wayne Bridge make Saints a much better prospect at the back.
Jason formed an impressive partnership with Paul Telfer last season. Paul's defensive leanings allowed Jason to move forward more freely. While a far cry from an overlapping type of player, this partnership could well be utilised in this season's away games.
