Saints Snapshots - West Brom

Well, what can you say about Jonah. I think it would be foolish to play him in the next fixture. Saints have brough in Antti Niemi for £2 million and have given Jones a shot at keeping his place.

Jones has now lost the confidence of a lot of fans and judging by the gutted reaction of the team, some of the players too. Now it's time for Niemi to come in and make his bid to be the regular number one.

I've always liked Jones and have generally defended him against some critisisms over the years. However there are weaknesses to his game that have not improved sufficiently and now look unlikely ever to. In my experience Niemi is the better all round keeper and hopefully Jones will have more drive to improve his game if he has to fight to get back into the team.

The goalkeeping position has needed this sort of competition for quite some time and it's good to see we have some options there at last. I look forward to Niemi's debut next week.

Saints at least created a few chances against West Brom which is more than can be said for Wednesday's game against Everton. However, Marians Pahars misssed a couple of chances he would have normally be expected to put away. Marians has been out of form in the last few weeks, but it's great to see him even getting into goalscoring positions.

With Beattie being largely ineffective, it's nice to have at least one forward who looks likely to score.

So there are plenty of positives to keep in mind even though the season hasn't got off to a huge success. If we were rooted to the bottom, without awin and playing dreadfully then I would be worried. But we have been plaing well for the main part, and are addressing the issue of getting the bloody ball into the net as well. If Marians performance is anything to go by, the goals won't be long in ocming.
