Wotte explained that Saints were holding off on bringing in an additional striker with the emergence of Kyle McClaggon, but the situation has changed with the youngster out for the season after rupturing his Achilles tendon.
He believes that Saints do have other options, but acknowledges that Saints need cover up front: "We still have Bradley Wright-Phillips, we have Matt Patterson and Euell is giving us something up front and Marek is benefiting from that.
"Marek is without a doubt striker number one at the moment, but you always have to secure yourself for injuries or suspensions. So, if we can pick up a player along the way, I really think that a striker would help us."
For all that Euell played well in the target man role against Preston, Saints are heavily reliant on Marek Saganowski maintaining form and fitness.
Unfortunately, Saints cannot recall Rasiak or John, both of whom are on season-long loans, so will have to look to pick up an experienced striker from the fringes of Premiership squads, no easy task with so many other sides looking to do the same and the problem of wages.
Saints are not thought to be considering offering unattached recent trialist Chris Fagan a contract, as they look at other options up front.
