Saints strikers - the verdict

Last updated : 10 May 2007 By Chris C
Last season Saints lacked a natural and consistent goal scorer, until the arrival of Rasiak and even he suffered through injury.

This season it has been far different, with no less than five strikers regularly in the goals and Saints the highest scoring team away from home. With Jones, Best, Rasiak, Wright-Phillips and soon to be fit again Saganowski all with a case for a runout on Saturday, who will get the nod?

Kenwyne Jones
16 goals in 28 starts, plus 9 as sub
Kenwyne has steadily improved all season and has come back from his latest injury full of power and running, making himself a real handful at Championship level, even if he remains at times wasteful with his finishing. He has become an effective targetman and with two goals, plus a strike against the bar, in his last fixture, he will be top of Burley's list to start against Derby.
Verdict: Shoe-in for a starting berth

Gregorz Rasiak
20 goals in 35 starts, plus 7 as sub
A candidate for player of the season in the first half of the season, he has struggled to get into the starting line-up of late, with Jones and Best's superior workrate and Saganowski's intelligent running and clinical finishing edging him out. Has looked very frustrated to be on the bench, especially having netted an impressive 20 times this season. With the pressure on, his clinical finishing may well be required off the bench.
Verdict: Coming off the bench to sneak the winner?

Leon Best
6 goals in 4 starts, plus 3 as sub
Has emerged from Dexter Blackstock and David McGoldrick's shadows to be the academy striker to watch, after a highly successful loan spell at Yeovil. Looking stronger and quicker, he is now starting to add a cooler head in front of goal to his natural potential as a poacher. Still inexperienced at the top level, he has shown he can handle the pressure with 3 vital goals in the last two games.
Verdict: A tight call, but starts with Saganowski not quite fit

Marek Saganowski
10 goals in 11 starts, plus 2 as sub
After a terrible season at Troyes, where he made just the six substitute appearances, Saganowski has been nothing short of a revelation. Once he got used to the pace of the Championship after so long on the sidelines, he showed he is a finisher of the highest level with a series of clinical strikes from relatively few chances. When fully fit, his economy of finishing simply has to be on the pitch.
Verdict: When 100% fit a sure starter, but bench duties for now

Bradley Wright-Phillips
11 goals in 19 starts, plus 25 as sub
If you include Leon Best's goals on loan, that is an impressive five strikers all in double figures for the season. Bradley has the raw materials - pace, dribbling ability and a powerful shot - but it hasn't quite happened for him this season, with some anonymous and some eye-catching performances, including the vital winner late on against Leeds.
Verdict: With so much competition, only likely to make the bench if Saganowski is not risked

So, there you have it. Jones and Best to start with Saganowski and Rasiak more than capable deputies on the bench. There should be Saints goals on Saturday, even against Derby's impressive defence.

Let's just hope the defence can do their job in the absence of the skipper Claus Lundekvam and we can head to Pride Park with a healthy aggregate lead.
