Saints' transfer policy on trial

The recent reserve game against non-league Lewes reserves saw two trialists on show. The good news is that they were in the two positions we most need reinforcements - full back and striker.

One was former Man Utd academy player, Chris Fagan, a striker who failed to make the breakthrough and was picked up by Glenn Hoddle's academy for released players.

To his credit he has managed to get into the Irish U21 squad without a club, but is hardly the experienced partner for Saganowski we so desperately lack. The club has plenty of promising youngsters available and it is too much to expect any released player to be the borderline-Premiership quality we require right now.

Also on trial was full-back Ronayne Marsh-Brown who recently left Conference South Dorchester reportedly to take up a community coaching position for Fulham.

By some miracle, they may yet be undiscovered future internationals that go on to be legends in the game, but are hardly of the profile that we need right now in crucial positions at the club.

The trials are of course only that and may or may not lead to an offer. The real question, however, is why we are looking at one-for-the-future non-league players to bulk up our squads when we are slipping further down the table.

It may well be with an eye on next season and an admission that the club is almost certainly heading for League One and further financial chaos.

Hardly the declaration of 'war', Head Coach Mark Wotte made on the club website. Let's hope that against the odds we can win at least the next battle against Preston.
