Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhuttl has confirmed that Danny Ings will be out for four to six with a knee injury.
The England international has started the season in great form, bagging five goals in seven games so far. This comes after he lit up the Premier League last campaign, scoring 22 times and narrowly missing out on the Golden Boot to Jamie Vardy.
Ings went down with a nasty looking knee injury in the closing stages of the Saints' 4-3 win over Aston Villa on Sunday, and after the game, Hasenhuttl admitted that the blow could keep his star man out for some time.
Luckily, the knock does not appear to be as bad as first feared, with the Austrian changing his prognosis during a press briefing on Wednesday.
"At the moment it looks like he is out for 4-6 weeks," Hasenhuttl said ahead of his side's game against Newcastle on Friday. "He'll have a small surgery tomorrow morning. It could be worse, but he'll be out and it's not good news for us."
Southampton have started the season well, racking up four wins, one draw and two defeats from their opening seven games. The Saints currently sit in fifth place and could go top - if only for a day - with a win over the Magpies. With Ings set to miss out, Che Adams will be expected to maintain his own good form and lead the line in his absence. After an underwhelming maiden Premier League campaign, the former Birmingham City man has improved considerably this time around.
The 24-year-old has scored two goals and contributed two assists, linking up well with Ings to form one of the most dangerous looking frontlines in the division. Republic of Ireland duo Shane Long and Michael Obafemi are the two likely benefactors from Ings' injury, and look set to be handed a chance to impress.
