Southampton's Cult Heroes coming to a book near you

The On the Cross mailbox gets a fair few press releases and to be honest rarely puts them on the site, but breaking a habit of the lifetime two worthy causes have made it up on the site in one day.

After the plug for the Saints Trust quiz night, comes a mention of a forthcoming book on a topic close to my heart, Saints' cult heroes. Yes, the publisher included the magic word in the release - not please, but Matt Le Tissier. Le God is there along with some other stellar names from Saints' history, including Ron Davies and that man Terry Paine.

'Southampton's Cult Heroes' may do exactly what it says on the tin, but I can't help thinking 'From Le God to Jesus, Saints Cult Heroes' would make a better title.

Here's some of the blurb from the publisher and it looks like Jeremy has done his research. Let's hope the review copy lives up to the hype (when I get it):

"How close did Matthew Le Tissier come to an unprecedented football comeback? Where is Ron Davies? How did terrace-darling Mark Dennis survive three near-death experiences and a right-hook from his manager Chris Nicholl? And from The Dell to Johannesburg, how has Terry Paine become one of the most famous faces in South Africa?

"Jeremy Wilson spent a year tracing the lives of Saints' greatest idols and talking exclusively with the biggest names in the club's history. It is an odyssey which has taken him more than 25,000 miles across Africa, America and Europe.

"Based on hundreds of new interviews including Le Tissier, Channon, Paine, McMenemy, Davies, Golac, Benali, Case, Marsden, O'Brien, Lundekvam, Dodd, Niemi and many others, Southampton's Cult Heroes examines the careers of the most popular characters to grace The Dell and St Mary's, delivering fresh insights and reliving the club's most magical moments.

"There will also be two signing sessions surrounding the book's launch. One at 1pm on Friday 13th October at Waterstone's Above Bar in Southampton City Centre (starring Matt Le Tissier, Francis Benali and Mark Dennis) and one before the home game with Stoke City on Saturday 21st October at the Club Shop at St. Mary's (starring Lawrie McMenemy and Brian O'Neil plus at least one more legend)."

Matt Le Tiss, eh? Even a cynic like me might just go for a signed copy.
