"Kevin has been the best out of form player I have ever seen in my life," Strachan said after the match.
"His passing and his movement and his all-round play have been superb. But strikers are judged on how many goals they score so in that respect he has been out of form.
"I was delighted to see him score and hopefully that will be the first of many.
"We were happy with our all-round performance apart from the lack of marking for their goal.
"We made a lot of chances and that was a lot better than we have played in recent matches.
"We were a bit flattered to go 2-0 up but up until 2-1 we could have had a lot more goals. Even once Leeds scored we could have scored two or three more."
Former Leeds legend Strachan believes his former club can bounce back from their season of misery.
"I hope Leeds get back to the top very soon and I think they will," he added.
"I don't know when - maybe next year, maybe in five or six years but the game goes in cycles and they will recover.
"Football is a professional business and I am employed to get results for Southampton.
"I don't look at it as sticking the boot in to Leeds because you have to concentrate on your own team."
