Paul Wotton
The Plymouth veteran has experience on his side and has been brought in to help nurture the youngsters. Although he has only just joined the club, he has of course captained Plymouth and is a strong candidate if he can nail down a place in the starting eleven ahead of the promise of Gillett and Schneiderlin in the anchor role.

Andrew Davies
The popular defender showed his willingness to fight for the cause playing through injury only stopping when his eyesight was threatened by a triple fracture of the cheekbone. In his time so far he has showed great leadership and at 23 and with Saints favouring youth he may be the right age to guide the youngsters. Still needs to prove his fitness ahead of the new season.

Chris Perry
The veteran of the squad is another brought back to help the youngsters through, but at 35 cannot be expected to either stay fit all season or even keep his place in the side as younger legs push for his place. Certainly has the experience.
Rating: 3/5 Broadsheet

Andrew Surman
The strongest link between the club and the fans, captaincy could be the making of Drew and another incentive to stay at the club he supports. Versatile to play every week he would be a popular choice on the terraces, but may still be a little young to impose himself on the team.
Rating: 2/5 Tabloid

Michael Svensson
There's no doubt that Killer can pull off a miracle return, then he would be a hugely popular choice as captain. However, he is not yet contracted to Saints and is unlikely to play throughout the season after four long years out of the game.
Rating: 1/5 Some bloke down the pub

Nathan Dyer
Still awaiting the outcome of his trial and training with the kids having refused a contract extension, Dyer would be an unusual choice at captain, but the armband may be just what the youngster needs to turn his troubled year around and persuade him to stay. No? Fair enough.

On the Cross choice - Andrew Davies
While the popular choice may be those with Saints as part of their DNA, Surman and Svensson, the standout choice is Andrew Davies who has the quality, age on his side and will to win to lead the side for this season and many more. If Saints future is to be youth, then it's hard to think of a better candidate for the job.
