Rumour Mill - Piper, Martyn, Sibon, Etherington

Gordon Strachan is not about to be rushed however. He is comfortable with the players he has and knows exactly where the squad needs to be strengthened.

Gordon told the Yorkshire post: "Despite the so-called cash slump in football I don't think it will make all that much difference to the big clubs who will still have options to choose ways to go which I don't think we have at Southampton.

"But I'm alright because when you know what you have and what you are realistically capable of getting then you know exactly how to operate. There's no point even thinking of saying I wish we could do this or that and buy him or him.
"Yet I would say most managers would like to be in my shoes, just about any other manager in Great Britain. I say that because of what a good lot I have here and I know what is the limit of being able to add to them.
"That means I have to make sure I improve as a manager and, as a consequence, improve the players that we have. That way I would hope to still have a job at the end of the season."
Of the players Saints are strongly linked with, Nigel Martyn is at the top of the list. Martyn has lost his place to Paul Robinson in the Leeds goal. Robinson put in an impressive dispaly against Man City on Saturday and Martyn may be waiting a while before he can get back in.
Martyn is believed to be available for £3 million but both the player and Leeds boss Terry Venables deny any talk of a move.
Next up is Gerald Sibon from Sheffield Wednesday. As talented as Sibon is, he chose to stay at Wednesday when they got relegated. The reason for this is the very large wage packet he is collecting every week. The rumour seems to have come from Wednesday's desperation to offload him rather than any real interest from Saints.
Even if Saints were interested, Sibon would only move if it helped his wallet. I doubt Saints would be able to offer him anywhere near what he expects.
Tribal football reports that Tottenham have turned down a bid form Saints for Matthew Etherington. Etherington got a good goal on Saturday having being called in to replace the injured Ziege.

Etherington's frustrations at not being offered a regular first team berth last season resulted in a transfer request being placed. Tribal suggests that the talented left winger would be available for £2 million. That's a complete bargain for Etherington who has been imressive since back in his Peterborough days.

He would also provide Saints with a much needed attacking option down the left flank allowing Fernandes to settle in to a similar role down the right.
On his way out could be Kevin Davies. Davies as completely underachieved since his return from Blackburn and is now behind Pahars, Beattie, Ormerod, Tessem and probably even Delgado at the club. Davies has been linked with a free move to Wolves.
I think we should keep hold of him. This is the last year of his contract so unless we can get a fee for him he'll be off for nothing anyway at the end of the season. In addition the transfer window means that we should have as robust a squad as possible for the months ahead. Davies has started to knuckle down and I think he should be provided with one last opportunity to push back into the first team reckoning.
