Rudi Skacel
Sigh. This one has been running for so long that you have to question whether Saints can pull it off now. The player lined up during Lowe's tenure is still yet to be unveiled at St Mary's with an upset Romanov playing hardball. A real talent and could be that missing link in the Saints side post-Le Tiss - a goal scoring midfielder. Let's hope that good things come to those who wait.

Kelvin Davis
Yes, the Sunderland keeper who let in that freak goal from Matty Taylor of south coast minnows Pompey. Not the best of seasons for him propping up the Premiership after being keeper of the season in the Championship. He is set to sign provided Saints can agree a price for him with Sunderland who are keen to recoup as much of the £1.25m they paid for him. Saints are less so, but this one should resolve itself shortly.

Andy Webster
Hearts Scottish international central defender has had talks with Saints after invoking a clause in his contract that meant he could be signed for as little as £250k. With Wigan and Everton in for him and with Saints signing Pele, this one is not going to happen.

Lee Hendrie
The Villan looked set to be on his way out under O'Leary and was a good shout for a season long loan. However, with the Irishman parting company with Deadly Doug Ellis, Villa fan Hendrie will be hoping to impress the new manager.

Tommy Smith
The Derby winger has been consistently linked with Saints and is a player Burley knows well from his time at Derby. If the move for Skacel doesn't come off, then expect to see this one back in the spotlight, as we continue our search for more goals from midfield.

Radoslaw Sobolewski
With Saints looking understrength in central midfield, Polish international and scrabble favourite, Sobolweski, has been strongly linked with Saints after a failed bid in the last transfer window. He didn't have the best of world cups, so the price may be right this time.

Darren Potter
Liverpool youngster Potter started slowly on loan but blossomed in the final few games of the season alongside Jermaine Wright in central midfield, emerging into a genuine playmaker with good skill on the ball. After his improved form, he will be wanting to impress at Liverpool, but faces the small matter of getting past Gerrard, Alonso and Sissoko and did not feature in the first pre-season game against Wrexham. Saints may have to wait to get him on loan again.

John Viafara
Rumours have emerged in The News that Saints were looking to sign Pompey and Colombia midfielder, Viafara, one of those that Redknapp claimed 'don't speak the English so good'. Viafara is a box-to-box midfielder with a questionnable first touch whose opportunities to impress were limited last season. A reported £1m price tag looks too steep with better options available.
