Matt Piper (Sunderland)
Turned us down last year and has had a pretty rotten season through injury and the fact his side got relegated. Still, a pacy, dangerous winger. He's right footed, which means that Strachan would play him on the left and free up Prutton for central midfield duties. He's worth another look as Sunderland look to offload.
Kevin Phillips (Sunderland)
Former Saints youth right back, who went on to be rather more successful up front. He's had a dreadful last couple of seasons. Ever since he was excluded from the England set up really. We look threadbare up front but that's with Pahars and Delgado still out. If we get rid of Davies, Delgado and Tessem then he may be worth a look at the right price.
It's safe to say that Saints will be linked to any number of palyers from the relegated Premiership clubs this season. As will everyone else if it's West Ham that go down.
Darren Kenton (Norwich)
Promising right back who can also cover in the centre half position. I believe he's out of contract at the end of the season. On the off chance there's not a bidding war for him, Saints could do a good bit of business by bringing him to the club. Kenton will be wanting a move to the Premiership if he's to forward his career. If Norwich don't make it through the play offs then Kenton could be the cover for the ageing Dodd and Telfer we've been looking for.
Incidentally, I quite rate Green in the Norwich goal, so if' Blayney doesn't work out...
Zoran Njegus (Seville)
A pretty talented, experiencd right back who will be out of contract in the summer. He's certainly good enough, but there's always a few questions over how long it will take him to settle in. If we got him on a free, he would be worth the wait.
Khalilou Fadiga (Auxerre)
It was believed that Saints had agreed to bring Fadiga to the club at the start of this season, but that the Auxerre coach wished to keep him for Champions League football. Fadiga still wants to play in the Premiership but Fernandes' excellent season may have put and end to him joing us. Fadiga is an excellent player and I wouldn't mind his arrival in the slightest.
Matthew Etherington (Tottenham)
Another long running tranfer rumour, Matt has not had the happiest of times at Tottenham since his move from Peterbrough. Having spent most of the last year on the transfer list and unhappy at his few opportunities, Saints could make a move to strengthen the right side of midfield (yes, I know he's left footed) and bring him in.
Jason Koumas (West Brom)
Although Jason's move to the Premiership hasn't worked out too well for him, he's a very useful player to have in the centre of midfield. Having said that we have Oakley, Svensson, Delap and Prutton all looking to get in the side there, so I think this one is very unlikey to happen.
Kenny Miller (Wolves)
I was surprised to see this rumour resurface as Miller was a target way back when Dave Jones was in charge. Oh look, who does Miller play for now ? Miller looks a talent in the Nationwide, but Saints silenced him easily enough in the cup tie, so I'd keep faith with Brett Ormerod instead.
Darren Huckerby (Nottingham Forest - on loan from Manchester City)
I can't seem to remember a season when Huckerby's name hasn't been linked with Southampton. A previous Coventry player even adds teh most tenuous connection with Strachan. Huckerby has been doing very well with Notts Forest, but in the Premiership his novelty value only seems to last a couple of months and then he's useless for the rest of the season. No thanks on this one.
Other rumours include Sean Gregan from West Brom, Olivier Thomert (Lens), Jason Roberts (West Brom), Michael Brown (Sheffield United), Graeme Lee (Hartlepool)
Out
Frederico Arias
Hasn't made the jump up from the reserves. It's early days for him at the club of course, but he has said that he'll want a move to secure first team football
Kevin Davies
Kevin is out of contract at the end of the season. If Strachan is looking for a new forward then it's curtains for Kev, who with the right attitude, will go on and do well in the first division.
Scott McDonald
Another Saints forward out of contract this summer. Scott was the next bright thing for Saints but it looks as though his attitude has prevented him from moving forward and he will be released.
Francis Benali
As he's now third choice left back, there's no chance of Franny getting a new deal. Hopefully, Saints will do the smart thing and keep him involved with the coaching set up as the man is Saints through and through and I can't think of a better person to represent the Saints.
Mark Draper
The last I heard, the club were looking to reach a settlement with Mark to end his injury prone spell with the club. As that's not materialised, he'll be a fixture in the treatment room next season as well. I've no doubt Saints will want shot of him to anyone willing to offer him a contract.
Jo Tessem
He's not a striker and he's never going to get back into our midfield. This leaves Jo with a bit of a quandry. He'll not settle for not being a regualr part of the team but he's going to have to live with being a utility substitute next season.
Agustin Delgado
As far as I'm aware Agustin is still on the transfer list. The only reason the club haven't got rid of him already is because they spent such a ludicrous amount of money to bring him here. Saints still have a dream where another club will overlook Delgado's shortcomings and make a decent bid for him.
Paul Jones
The Welsh international 'keeper is way too good to be stuck on a bench. Only the fact that Saints were askiing for a fee prevented him moving on in the January transfer window. Saints will hope to keep him around as cover to give Blayney the chance to develop, but Jonah will be looking for a move.
I'm not even going to go into the rubbish that links Bridge (Newcastle, Liverpool) , Niemi or Beattie (Inter) with a move away from the club. Even the Rumour Mill has to draw a line somewhere.
