Rumour Round Up

"We certainly need to strengthen as we are nowhere near strong enough to get out of this league," said Harry Redknapp today as he looked forlornly around the training ground for any remaining players.

First up is the gossip that Paul Telfer is in talks with Celtic. Telfer, versatile as a full back or in midfield, is a strong presence in the Saints side. He's exactly the sort of player who'll do a good job with Celtic. Whether or not the fans are impressed is another matter. I know I had my doubts when he joined us, as one of Strachan's first signings.

With Dennis Wise able to perform a similar role in midfield for Saints, perhaps this will be a good move all round. Which is my way of saying, now that Redknapp has bought Wise, the writing's on the wall for Telfer and a move is in his best interests.

"I think the selling will stop now," proclaimed boss Harry Redknapp only to follow up with "...the only other one is the goalkeeper Niemi."

With Celtic having failed in their attempt to land the 'keeper, Saints rivals Portsmouth are now in the frame. With Smith and Blayney in the wings, this is the one area of the team I'm not actually worried about.

On the plus side, every player on the planet prepared to go on trial is making his way to St Mary's.

"I've just received a call from my agent that I have to go to England," said Udinese's Siyabonga Nomvete, "because one of the First Division sides wants me to have trials with them." Let's hope his agent lets him know which one.

Nomvette is seen by SKY Sports and possibly Harry Redknapp, as a replacement for Crouch. Which is pretty good work for a manager surprised by Crouch's absence at training today.

With Bernard, Le Saux and Van Damme already gone, it stands to reason that Saints' sole remaining left back (well centre back, who can play left back) should be linked with a move to Sunderland. Danny Higginbotham is priced at £1 million to move back to the Premiership with the Black Cats for a single season before facing Championship football once again.

Well, if we sell Higginbotham and Paul Telfer, it means a right back of Nilsson or Chris Baird, with Darren Kenton switching to left back. Our promotion is practically sealed.

Meanwhile, we still await news on Djamel Belmadi, who may be slightly better than Nilsson or Fernandes on Saints flank next season.

"I like Belmadi. He's a very good player," said Harry Redknapp, strangely failing to abuse any of his existing players.

"He is a good footballer and he would get in this team with no problem," he continued, putting the boot into nearby flop Nilsson.

"He is a free agent and if I can do something with him then I will do. I'll speak with the chairman about him and see what we can sort out."

In defence, we've been tenuously linked with Isaac Okoronkwo who played a massive seven games for Wolves before they realised they didn't want him. More substantially, the link with West Brom's Darren Purse is still in the news.
