Baffling Saints revel in March Madness

March Madness, the season ticket promo said, and it's been just that. Talk about a last minute publicity stunt to push the early bird season ticket sales!

With eight first team regulars missing, it was case of if you're fit, you're in the squad, with Cranie drafted back from loan to make up the 16.

It was a mixture of the forgotten (Ostlund, Skacel, Bialkowski), the kids (Dyer, Guthrie, Best) and what's left, but somehow the side kept a clean sheet and scored six wonderful goals from just seven attempts on target.

To be honest, I'm still stunned from this result on a day when just about everything went for us. It wasn't as if we'd even been threatening it after a terrible run of one point in twelve and a nervous looking start when Wolves were well on top.

Football, and Saints in particular, is at times baffling and capable of throwing up these freak results. Saints showed the kind of economy of finishing that we have been bemoaning all season.

Both strikers scored, Surman scored in a game for the second time this season and even Gary Breen showed why West Ham might be missing him in the Premiership with a bizarre own goal.

Most likely the jumble sale of a line-up simply played with less pressure on their shoulders and actually started to enjoy it once the second goal went it. They may actually have benefited from Gareth Bale's absence, as in our slump Saints have been looking to the supremely talented Gareth to do it all on his own

Certain the saved penalty lifted confidence and ensured that this would be no nervous day hanging onto a lead in a game that should have been out of sight.

It was also down to Saganowski's growing confidence in the English game with a wonderful hat-trick that will leave Rasiak feeling even sicker than from his virus. His second goal was described as the generous McCarthy as 'world-class' and we have to thank Burley for unearthing another Polish gem of the quality of Bart 'Polish boy mountain' Bialkowski who was simply outstanding.

Yes, Saints being Saints, we will probably blow it all in our next game and Saint our long suffering fans back into despair, but let's just enjoy one of the great days when our stuttering side showed just what they are capable of with the most emphatic of emphatic drubbings of a promotion rival away from home.

Sorry for the 'non-standard' report today, but I think a need a long sit down!
