Starting line-ups

Davis - 7: Made some good catches and punches under pressure and had little chance for the winner, thanks to an inch perfect cross.

Ifil - 7:
Showed great speed and strength in defence making a series of important sliding tackles, but was out powered for the all important goal as the much larger Iwelumo got the better of him at the far post.

Thomas - 7: Had a tough afternoon against the massive Iwelumo, but came through the challenge well, first alongside Viafara and then Dailly after the positional switch. Swept up well at the back.

Viafara - 8: Again put into central defence to counter Iwelumo and gave his all, even though he's not a natural centre back. Moved forward to where he was needed most against Charlton's five man midfield. Made numerous saving challenges and never stopped running, covering every blade of grass.

Vignal - 6: Solid in defence, solid in attack, but did little to change the game in either. One weaving run hinted at the talent at his disposal, but needs to offer more to show what he's capable of.

Dyer - 6: Tigerish tackling back, but often headless going forward, it wasn't quite happening for Nathan today, despite being involved in some of Saints' best moves.

Dailly - 6: Anonymous in midfield as Saints were overrun early on, he was much better at centre back, organising his fellow defenders and giving his all in the aerial battle. Typical of his attitude, he preferred to get stitches rather than go off.

Idiakez - 6: Needed much more support in central midfield as the game passed him by, despite some picture postcard crossfield passes. Didn't quite come off for him on set pieces as a number of free kicks and two long range strikes failed to make the breakthrough.

Surman - 5: Poor performance from Drew who seems a shadow of the player who was called up for England U21. Out of tune with his teammates after being out of the team, he had little impact on the game and failed to stop Charlton's passing game. Let's hope he gets back to his cultured best soon.

Wright-Phillips - 6: At the heart of some silky Saints moves that should have resulted in goals, but the ball didn't quite fall for him in front of goal. Faded badly in the second half after a karate kick in the back.

John - 6: Back to his wasteful worst in front of goal after his hot streak of form. Missed three excellent chances, including the miss of the game when clean through and in plenty of space.

Subs

Rasiak - 5: Made no impact on the game, but he's there to finish off chances and would have been sure to put away one of John's sitters.

Hammill - 3: Tried to beat three men in his own half, wasted several promising positions with over-hit crosses and frequently stood with his hands on his hips expecting the ball to come. Talented player, but it's a team game and hopefully this will prove a good lesson to get the bet out of his undoubted ability. His showboating at half-time was outshone by the magnificent Mr Woo - sign him up!

Davies - 5: playing out of position at left back, he was skinned for the late winner - welcome to the Saints defence, Andrew! So right footed it was a joke, what was he doing at left back and not centre back?
