World Cup star El Hadji Diouf bagged two goals in Liverpool's 3-0 victory over Southampton at Anfield.
The Reds new boy was in outstanding form in front of the home fans who had plenty to cheer about.
Danny Murphy finished the scoring when he converted a penalty in the dying minutes after substitute Bruno Cheyrou was brought down by Saints defender Wayne Bridge.
Gerard Houllier's men had the perfect start with a goal with only three minutes on the clock.
Midfield general Steven Gerrard swept a delightful ball out wide to Emile Heskey, who started up front alongside Diouf and Michael Owen.
Paul Telfer slipped up allowing Heskey to skip past and fire over a ball across the six-yard area and the flamboyant Diouf was perfectly positioned to slot home goal number one and his first at Anfield.
The visitors were in danger of being overrun and looked to have gone further behind after 27 minutes. Murphy's free-kick rebounded off the woodwork and Owen pounced to hammer home.
But he was adjudged to have been offside.
Towering Reds' captain Sami Hyypia had a rasping shot dramatically saved on the line by the Saints' Telfer just minutes before the break.
Liverpool came out after the break and doubled their lead within five minutes. A long throw by Abel Xavier was flicked on by Heskey and up popped that man Diouf to nod home his second of the day.
Southampton were unlucky not to narrow the gap on 65 but Murphy was perfectly placed to head clear off the line and the midfielder hammered home a penalty in the dying minutes to cap an excellent performance
