Starting line-up
Davis - 6: some trademark reaction saves on the infrequent times he was called upon. Went the right way for the penalty, but didn't get near it. Failed to command his box and should have come for their second. Almost let a ball squirm through his grasp again, but this time just held on to spare embarrassment two games in a row.
Wright - 4: why on earth was a central midfielder playing at right back when we have a Swedish international right back on the bench? Clearly something has gone on behind the scenes, as Wright looked slow, out of position and nervous after misplacing a series of passes. Poor game, poor decision. Ostlund should have replaced him at half-time.
Pele - 8: MOTM. An assured display from Pele who is growing in confidence and stature. Stood up well to the physical challenge from Alan 'sack of spuds' Lee and scored a perfectly good goal which the non-Russian linesman failed to spot.
Baird - 7: A little quiet today after so many standout performances of late. May have been a little tired after his international heroics for Northern Ireland. As usual was a calming presence at the back and won more than his fair share of headers.
Makin - 6: An improved display from Makin who looked better at left back than he did at right against Preston. Pretty average in the first half, but he overlapped well in the second putting in a series of decent crosses.
Dyer - 7: started like a house on fire tearing down the right wing and beating his man with ease. Linked up well with Viafara and provided much of Saints' threat down the right hand side. Faded late on and was replaced by Surman. Still needs to produce more end product, but an improved performance.
Idiakez - 7: like Dyer, started beautifully controlling the game and looking the playmaker we have lacked in midfield. His strength on the ball and calming presence helped Saints keep our shape. Hit the crossbar with a corner worthy of the great Le Tiss. Tired badly in the second half allowing Ipswich into the game, looking a shadow of his former self. Let's hope he's not quite fit yet as we need a full 90 minutes from him.
Skacel - 5: a disappointing day's work from the fan's favourite. Once again anonymous in the first half, failing to look for the ball enough or to make good use of it when he had it. Improved in the second half, but with his talent he needs to impose himself more on the game.
Viafara - 8: all that work on his passing in training looked to have paid off as he conceded possession far less and combined very effectively with Nathan Dyer on the right. As usual had to do the bulk of the tackling in the team, working his socks off for the cause. Needs to watch his temper as on another day throwing the ball in an opponent's face will get you sent off.
Jones - 6: the usual mixed bag from Jones who opened the scoring turning on a sixpence to slot in the corner. He is slowly gaining more confidence on the ball, but needs to combine better with his strike partner with two many flick-ons being wasted. Should have put Saints 2-0 up when clean through on goal, but neither shot or passed until it was too late.
Rasiak - 7: desperately unlucky not to score, with a disallowed goal and a spectacular volley over the keeper from 35 yards that hit the inside of the post. Won some important headers at the back and worked harder in defence than against Preston.
Substitutes
Surman - 6: came on for Dyer on the right of midfield and tried his hardest but the ball wouldn't fall for him in front of goal. Much better on the flanks than in central midfield.
Wright-Phillips - 7: lovely piece of skill to turn in the box and send a curler onto the post, but a correspondingly poor piece of technique to send a late free header well wide when inside the 6 yard box.
